The Academy Board takes the annual opportunity to provide its
members with an update of the Academy's mission and activities at
the International Conference and Exhibition on Healthcare Facility
Planning, Design and Construction (PDC) in Orlando. This issue will
feature reports of 2008's PDC from various
perspectives.

Board as the 2008 Update at the PDC in Orlando.
James Harrell, FAIA, FACHA, provided us with the sketches
below of the town of Celebration, FL, made while he was in Orlando
for the PDC.

Session at 2008 PDC
Those of you who know me well are familiar with my frequent use of
the phrase The future isnt what it used to
be.
Never was this more true than in contemporary American healthcare
and related planning, design, and construction.
For any new, moderately large healthcare facility opening its doors
to patients today, March 10, 2008, its likely that planning
started about the time that this conference convened five years ago
on March 10, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona.
Just ponder for a moment what most people likely werent
talking a lot about five years ago when todays new facility
was in its infancy.

Bill Sheely, AIA, ACHA, 2008 PDC Conference
Report
Once again, the 2008 PDC enabled hospital administrators, facility
engineers, clinical staff, architects, engineers, contractors and
researchers the opportunity to come together and discuss how to
plan, design and construct innovative healthcare facilities in a
pro-active, high-energy environment.
Over the course of three and a half days, attendees were challenged
to explore their passions to improve healthcare for patients,
families and clinicians. Various venues (including plenary
sessions, concurrent sessions in seven tracks, technical exhibits,
parties and receptions) featured the latest services, products and
technologies for healthcare planning, design and construction, and
the conference was one of the largest exhibit of healthcare
projects shown to date.

Jeffrey S. Monzu, AIA, PDC Viewpoint: Emerging
Professionals
The 2008 PDC Conference in Orlando was a great experience, and not
just because the temperature back home in Omaha was about 70
degrees colder while we were there! Every year that I attend, I am
amazed by the collection of talent and resources that come together
in one location to better the field in which we all practice. Most
of the year we compete against one another for new business, new
clients, and that next great opportunity to excel at what we do.
But the real purpose behind the PDC is to make us all come together
to discuss issues that raise the bar for healthcare facilities
design and construction. This ultimately benefits the staff and
patients served by the facilities we design.

AAH Foundation Update
Our planning for a program to be held later this fall in Chicago is
in full swing. We are developing an informative and provocative
event ,which will include several international and national
experts on the topic of private financing initiatives for
healthcare. This will be a one-day program which will focus on what
has and hasnt worked in the both the UK and Canada, as well
as the opportunities for translating these lessons to the US.
Because of other AIA and Academy commitments, Trustee Dan Noble
submitted his resignation this March, which we regretfully
accepted. Dan has provided great insight and innovative ideas to
the Foundation Board, for which we are very grateful. In order to
fill Dans position, the Board voted Tom Harvey, AIA, FACHA,
of HKS as our newest Trustee.
If you have any questions about any of our projects or our overall
efforts, please do not hesitate to contact me or any of the other
Trustees.
