CASE STUDY TOPIC

Resolving a Project Management DilemmaWrite a 300-word-or-less description of how you would lead or manage the design and building process to a favorable conclusion. Be innovative and create a process for a successful outcome from the following circumstances:

The senior partner of marketing has informed you of a new project that has been awarded to your firm. You, as the project manager, will head up the project. It is a high profile project and provides intriguing design and management opportunities. You will be part of a team that you have worked with previously. The owner has decided to use an Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) approach, with your firm, the contractor, and the engineering firms all under a single contract. All the parties of this contract will share in the cost savings or cost over-runs. Additionally, all project documentation will be in BIM and construction coordination in a 3d aggregating program (like Navisworks®).

The bad news? None of the parties has ever done an IPD project before. Not only that, but you know, based on past experiences, that the engineering team has difficulty meeting deadlines and coordinating with the architectural construction documents, the contractor has displayed deeply rooted distrust for your design team, and the owner has difficulty making timely decisions, and all team members have limited skill sets in BIM.

All the parties—owner, contractor, engineering firms and your architectural firm—are on board at the project’s inception.

How will you manage the project considering this information and your personal goal of improving your own knowledge, achieving an optimal design solution, and making a profit for your firm? What are some of your specific ideas for weaving together, motivating and empowering the team members? You may be creative about both the process and the product.
