London School Shows that School Design Really Matters!
Bukky Akinsanmi, AIA LEED AP
A 'sink' school in the colloquial British parlance is a failing school, often characterized by poor academic performance, weak examination results, absenteeism, badly-behaved students, demoralized teachers and an awful reputation amongst parents. Kingsdale Foundation School, London, was one of such schools until a few years ago. Read the full article.

Higher Education Subcommittee
The subcommittee is following three themes for research. In future communications, expect to receive detailed information and research on the following areas of exploration by the Higher Education subcommittee. Also, we are always recruiting volunteers for our subcommittee and to assist in our efforts! Read the full update.

American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) Guides
The EnergySmart Schools Web site provides a few tools aimed at architects and designers, including the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings. The EnergySmart Schools Program also is in the final stages of editing its Guide to Operating and Maintaining EnergySmart Schools. This guide includes sections intended for designers of construction or renovation projects.

Energy-efficient schools use less energy, cost less to operate, use fewer natural resources, and impact the environment less than conventional buildings. The design phase provides the best opportunity for incorporating energy-efficient and sustainable elements into an educational building. Acknowledging this fact, the U.S. Department of Energy's EnergySmart Schools Program offers resources created with architects and designers in mind. The program's Web site suggests ways for users to plan, finance, design and build, and operate and maintain their high-performance schools.

School districts around the nation are discovering energy-efficient, high-performance schools improve teacher and student performance, save money, and help the environment. These districts are also fleshing out the best ways to not only design and construct new high-performance buildings, but also retrofit old facilities, turning them into efficient environments. The U.S. Department of Energy's EnergySmart Schools Program leads such districts through construction, renovation, and retrofit projects by offering resources such as the ASHRAE Advanced Energy Design Guide for K-12 School Buildings and the Guide to Financing EnergySmart Schools.
