About AIA Housing and Custom Residential

The AIA Housing and Custom Residential Knowledge Community tracks housing issues and develops relationships with industry stakeholders to encourage and promote safe, attractive, accessible, and affordable housing for all Americans.

Mission Statement

The knowledge community's mission is to

  • Encourage and actively develop networks within and outside the profession to advance the state of professional practice in housing design
  • Use these networks to increase the awareness that quality housing production is a cornerstone of the economic vitality of our cities and towns
  • Create value for AIA members and the general public
  • Develop learning opportunities for members to acquire new skills
  • Advocate for inclusive design and planning processes, streamlined regulatory processes, and removal of restrictive zoning policies
  • Encourage research on the development of new housing types and technologies that create livable communities and promote housing choice regardless of race, age, income, physical or mental disability, or culture.

Goals

  • Improve communication with state and local component housing committees
  • Highlight the contributions architects make to excellent residential design through education, awards programs, the Affordable Housing Design Advisor, and other initiatives
  • Maintain and develop relationships among members, communities, and allied organizations to promote the goal of decent and obtainable housing.
