Texas architects David Lake, FAIA, and Ted Flato, FAIA are presented with the 2024 AIA Gold Medal
The longtime pair was met with a standing ovation from colleagues and peers at AIA24 in celebration of their inclusive design and their contributions to the profession.
Architecture ought to be shaped by the environment.
That is the philosophy of 2024 AIA Gold Medal recipients David Lake, FAIA, and Ted Flato, FAIA. Outspoken advocates for urban development, Lake and Flato have established themselves as citizen architects through their numerous plans and designs in cities across Texas and beyond. AIA recognized their work with its top honor, given to individuals whose significant body of work has had a lasting influence on the theory and practice of architecture.
At the helm of their firm Lake|Flato over the last 40 years, Lake and Flato have reframed the conversation around sustainability and social and environmental responsibility through their inclusive design practice that will reverberate for decades to come.
“We’ve had a wonderful partnership and friendship,” said Flato. “Having our peers feel that the work we’ve been doing is at the level of some of the others we’re on the wall with is just overwhelming.”
"We are only as good as everyone here today,” said Lake. “You all make us better.”
