Carl Sergio, AIA
Whether through travel to other countries and U.S. states or conversing with people in other languages, Carl Sergio, AIA, is always eager to find meaningful ways to connect with others. Driven by the challenges he faced while job hunting during the 2008 recession, Sergio used his talents as a creator, connector, and collaborator to make it easier for students and emerging professionals to explore the profession. Through the mentorship programs he has initiated or supported, Sergio has personally impacted hundreds of students, fellows, peers, and firms across all 50 states and seven countries.

Sergio, currently a senior project architect Wright Heerema Architects in Chicago, has also contributed to more than two million square feet of successful retail, hotel, restaurant, and commercial office space. Previously, as a project architect for Gensler, he collaborated with 13 of the firm’s offices on nationwide projects for JLL, Walmart, PNC Bank, and other significant clients. His hiring by former Gensler teammates at Interior Architects was a direct result of his demonstrated talents and ability to nurture a productive studio culture. When he joined the rapidly growing virtual studio, he was tasked with triaging the delivery of five projects for a high-pressure electric automobile client that had caused multiple staff resignations and threatened many more. Through his guidance, relationships were repaired and the client received unique projects that showcase its cutting-edge cars.
Early in his career, Sergio joined the YAF Indianapolis steering committee, which was his first taste of AIA service and leadership. Shortly after, he graduated from AIA Chicago’s Bridge Mentorship Program and led the program for the next eight years. Through his leadership, the nationally recognized program has engaged more than 150 young leaders and nearly 50 AIA Fellows while inspiring other chapters to create similar programs.
When he became AIA Illinois’ young architect regional director, Sergio created a toolkit for new emerging professional groups in AIA chapters across the country, documented AIA mentorship programs, and brought the EP-Friendly Firm Award to his state. He chaired the EP Network as the COVID-19 pandemic began and then maintained relationships and networks virtually. With the support of an AIA College of Fellows grant, he produced a series of “Firmside Chat” videos, hosted virtual happy hours, and organized forums with NOMA focused on racial injustice.
Sergio continues to serve his colleagues and community on AIA Chicago’s Education Committee and as a member of the ACE Mentorship team. For the latter, he envisioned pro bono projects with Rebuilding Together and City Year and captained a Canstruction team that received a People’s Choice award and raised more than $30,000 in donated food over four years.
Sergio’s deep commitment to practice and service is underpinned by his natural ability to foster community and support those who need it most. His infectious, can-do attitude is only matched by his dedication to others.
