The Bell Propelled: A Progress Report on the Sustainability Leadership Opportunity Scan
In September 2013, we published the “Sustainability Leadership Opportunity Scan” to identify how we could strengthen our role in driving leadership opportunities and recognition for architects through sustainability. It identified four priority areas:
- Energy
- Materials
- Health
- Resilience
These four priority areas inform our values related to sustainability and climate change. When architecture is sustainable, it performs to its highest design potential producing, not consuming; providing resilient structures and communities that withstand the onslaughts of both natural and manmade disasters; and fostering opportunities.
Positioning current & future generations for prosperity
The Sustainability Leadership Opportunity Scan charted a path forward for AIA to implement strategies to address each of the four priority areas; to support bold action at the member, component, and national levels; and to expand sustainability partnerships, advocacy, and educational programs.
Our most recent progress report, The Bell Propelled, begins to quantify our impact between 2013 and 2017.
Highlights include:
- More than 44 organizations have signed the landmark “Building Industry Statement on Resilience.”
- More than 470 firms have joined the 2030 Commitment.
- More than 1,300 individuals have purchased AIA+2030 online education through AIAU.
- More than 65 communities have formed interest groups addressing active design, community resilience, urban planning, and other sustainability topics.
New data offers additional insights into continued—and emerging—opportunities to demonstrate sustainability leadership in firms, communities, and the industry.
